Suara.com – Muslims will soon be fasting for Ramadan. Before we do this, it's a good idea to remember the law on smoking while fasting. This is important for those who are used to smoking at any time.
The conditions for valid fasting are that we can endure hunger and thirst, and not do things that can break the fast, such as committing adultery, committing slander, or getting angry. So can smoking be one of the things that breaks fasting because this includes the activity of intentionally putting something into our body, such as eating.
Scholars have been discussing the law of smoking while fasting for a long time. This law was then conveyed repeatedly to remind Muslims not to carry out actions that could harm themselves.
Quoted from islam.nu.or.id, something that enters the body and can break the fast is called 'ain in fiqh law. Then, Sheikh Zakariya al-Anshari mentioned in Fathul Wahhab, 'ain is any object, whether food, drink, or medicine (See Sheikh Zakariya Al-Anshari, Fathul Wahhab 'ala Syarhi Manhajut Thullab, Beirut, Darul Fikr, 1994, chapter 1, page 140).
One of the scholars of the Shafii sect named Sheikh Sulaiman al-'Ujaili mentioned in his book Hashiyatul Jamal, that;
And from the spring is smoke, but on the details: If the one who now drinks from the known medicine has broken the fast, and if it is something else like the smoke of cooking, this does not break the fast. He is the approved one
Meaning: “And part of 'ain (things that break the fast) is smoke, but it must be sorted. If the smoke/vapour is what is known to be smoked nowadays (meaning tobacco) then the fast is broken. But if there is other smoke/vapor, such as cooking smoke/vapor, then it does not break the fast. “This is a mu'tamad opinion (referred to by scholars because of the strength of their arguments).” (See Sulaiman al-'Ujaili, Hasyiyatul Jumal 'ala Syarhil Minhaj, Beirut, Darul Fikr, juz 2 page 317)
Based on this information, Ahmad Sarwat in the fasting feather: Terms of Harmony and Those Who Cancel, states that smoking laws are divided into two, namely active smokers and passive smokers. The law on smoking for active smokers during fasting is that it is not permitted, or it can be canceled because there is an element of deliberate use of tobacco. In this incident, cigarette smoke was considered 'ain.
Because it is considered 'ain, the smoke inhaled from this cigarette is invalid. The following is the statement from Sheikh Nawawi al-Banteni in the book Nihayatuz Zain:
A fasting person is broken by the arrival of a spring from that source into the entire stomach from an open outlet with intention, choice, and knowledge of the prohibition…and among them is the well-known smoke.
Meaning: Until 'ain reaches the throat from a deliberately opened hole and knowing its haram invalidates the fast…like smoking smoke (known as cigarettes). (See Sheikh Muhammad Nawawi al-Bantani, Nihayatuz Zain fi Irsyadul Mubtadiin, Beirut: Darul Fikr, vol. 1, page 187)
Meanwhile, for passive smokers, cigarette smoke does not break the fast because they accidentally consume tobacco. This is the same as when someone inhales the aroma of cooking while preparing food to break the fast. That is the information regarding the law on smoking while fasting. Hope it is useful.
