Taipei —
Reaction to president-elect Lai Ching-te’s recent victory has been overwhelming, but a prominent Taiwanese analyst believes foreign policy and cross-strait relations with China “will remain the same.”
Speaking at an event in Taipei City on Sunday (14/1), Associate Professor at National Tsing Hua University, Dr. Chen Ming-chi said “I think in general foreign policy and cross-strait relations will remain the same. But this will really depend on President Xi Jinping’s attitude.
Lai won the election in which the three figures participated by winning 40% of the vote. However, this number is less than her predecessor, Tsai Ing-wen, who clearly won the majority of votes in 2020.
Lai is determined to strengthen the economy and defense of the island nation, which in terms of trade is very dependent on China. He also sought to soften his previous stance as a “pragmatic worker for Taiwan independence.”
The inauguration of the new president is scheduled to take place on May 20. (em/hour)
