DEN HAAG – The International Court of Justice (ICJ), on Friday (12/1/2024), said it would begin deliberations after completing a two-day public hearing regarding the South African case which accused Israel of committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.
“Public hearings regarding the request for indication of temporary measures submitted by South Africa in the case of the Application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip (South Africa sued Israel) ended today,” said the ICJ statement.
“The court will now begin its deliberations. “The Court’s decision will be delivered at a general session, the date of which will be announced in due course,” explained the UN Top Court.
South Africa, which filed the case in December, accused the Israeli government of committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.
They asked the Court to take temporary measures to protect the Palestinian people, including by calling on Israel to immediately stop military attacks.
South Africa presented a list of alleged acts of genocide committed by Israel on the first day of the trial on Thursday, while Israel defended itself on Friday.
Israel has killed more than 23,700 Palestinians in Gaza since cross-border attacks by Hamas on October 7.
The Israeli colonial regime’s military campaigns also caused mass displacement, destruction and famine.
