Canadian firefighters prevented a bushfire near the Northwest Territories capital as well as a threatened city in British Columbia, but neither side claimed to have put out the blazes while the weather forecast service warned that drier, windier weather was to come.
The more ‘friendly’ weather is expected to end on Sunday (20/8). The conditions have helped firefighters struggling to contain the flames of Canada’s worst blaze which has destroyed homes and other structures, polluted the air with thick smoke and prompted evacuation orders for tens of thousands of residents.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made remarks about the latest incident response team and bushfires Sunday afternoon after he arrived in Charlottetown for a federal cabinet retreat that began on Monday (21/8).
“The federal government is continuing to step up efforts. We are deploying the resources of the Canadian Defense Forces. We are actively coordinating with regional and local governments to make sure residents are safe, making sure we are doing everything we can to protect life and property. But there is still much to do and we will continue focus on that,” Trudeau said. (s/f)
