Indonesian President-elect Prabowo Subianto will visit China next week, said the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Friday (29/3). Prabowo's visit to Indonesia's main trading partner will be his first since being declared the winner of the presidential election.
At the invitation of President Xi Jinping, Prabowo, who will take office at the end of this year, will visit China from Sunday to Tuesday, said Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying.
Xi this month congratulated Prabowo, Indonesia's defense minister, on his victory and said he considered relations with the archipelago nation of nearly 280 million people “very important”.
China is one of the largest sources of foreign direct investment in Indonesia.
Last year, Jakarta inaugurated Southeast Asia's first high-speed rail line, a multibillion-dollar project backed by Beijing.
Chinese companies have poured billions of dollars into Indonesia's natural resources in recent years, especially the nickel sector.
The Chinese spending has sparked unrest over wages and working conditions at several Chinese-funded nickel processing plants, as Indonesia seeks to become a major player in the electric vehicle supply chain. (ab/lt)
