BALTIMORE – The decades-old Baltimore Bridge in the United States (US) collapsed after being hit by a large cargo ship. The bridge, called Francis Scott Key, is 2.4 km long and is in Baltimore Harbor.
Reporting from CBS News, shocking video shows the moment a large cargo ship crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore on Tuesday morning, sending a number of people and vehicles plunging into the Patapsco River.
“Six people on the bridge are missing and presumed dead,” officials said late Tuesday.
Two other people were rescued from the water. “The eight people were construction workers who were repairing holes in the bridge,” officials said.
The tragedy of the bridge collapse in Baltimore has raised a number of big question marks.
One of the questions that arises is who owned and what type of ship hit the Francis Scott Key Bridge.
Cargo Ship that Crashed on Baltimore Bridge
According to The Guardian, the Francis Scott Key Bridge was hit by a 948-foot or 289-meter Singapore-flagged container ship that was leaving the port en route to Sri Lanka.
In the video circulating, the Dali cargo ship lost power or experienced a power outage moments before the accident occurred. This is thought to be the cause of the ship's crew losing control of the steering wheel.
This was confirmed by a confidential memo issued by CISA, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, saying the ship reported a loss of propulsion.
Meanwhile, Maryland Governor Wes Moore said the crew reported an “electrical problem”.
Two US officials told CBS News that several alarms sounded on the ship, alerting the pilot and crew to problems on board.
