JAKARTA – Grab Indonesia, Gojek, or Bluebird Indonesia have never released figures on cases of violence or sexual harassment on their platforms.
This is different from ridesharing platforms such as Uber and Lyft, the two largest services in America that have reported the number of sexual assaults or alleged crimes that occurred.
Even though Uber and Lyft claim to have protocols for screening drivers, there are still risks when using ride-sharing services.
Uber first reported their safety statistics in 2017. During 2017-2018, there were a total of 5,981 cases of sexual violence and suspected violence on their platform. Around 3,045 cases occurred in 2018. This means that there were 250 cases in 1 month or almost every day.
Meanwhile, Lyft released a report regarding security in 2020 and apparently showed a similar percentage of violence related to rideshare service passengers.
The nonprofit Helpingsurvivors.org says the ridesharing industry relies on the convenience of strangers getting into other people's cars, and the convenience of strangers picking them up and driving them around.
“In America, even though these companies tout themselves as easy, reliable, and safe forms of transportation, thousands of incidents
“hurts, from sexual harassment to murder, have occurred for years in ridesharing services,” the organization wrote.
“It is unfortunate that it takes pain for these companies to act, which is why it is important to provide statistics and data to the masses on safety so they can make informed decisions,”.
Komnas Perempuan Commissioner Siti Aminah Tardi once highlighted the case of a Blue Bird taxi driver who verbally abused a Russian woman named Valerie in the form of catcalling.
Catcalling is prohibited by Law Number 12 of 2022 concerning Criminal Sexual Violence. Moreover, committing abuse and
extortion of female passengers.
“The business world, especially public transportation, is obliged to build a safe space from sexual violence, including for service users,” he said.
