MOSCOW – President Vladimir Putin emphasized that Russia has no intention of canceling the culture of any country. This was stated by Putin on Wednesday (27/3/2024) during his working visit to the Tver Region.
According to Putin, Moscow understands the difference between society and elites, respects the culture of each country, and also considers their culture to be part of the world heritage.
Putin was speaking with regional artists when the issue of attempts to “cancel” Russian culture by some Western countries surfaced. According to Putin, Moscow has no plans to give a similar response.
“We don't have unfriendly countries, we have unfriendly elites in these countries,” said Putin.
He added, “The Russian government has never tried to cancel performances by foreign artists or culture. On the contrary, we believe Russian culture is becoming part of global culture and we are proud (of this).”
Putin explained that the Russian authorities were trying to take into account the global cultural context and did not exclude anything.
“Those who seek to erase the culture of a country of 190 million people are unwise,” the president said, referring to Western moves during the Ukraine conflict.
Western countries have repeatedly attempted to ban performances by Russian artists and musicians, as well as those seen as supporting Moscow.
Recently, the famous Italian singer Enzo Ghinazzi, known as Pupo, canceled his upcoming show in Lithuania because of a concert he was holding in the Kremlin in March.
