JAKARTA – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) watched together the Indonesian national football team's match against Vietnam 3-0 in the 2026 World Cup Qualification match for Asia Zone Group F.
The President watched with a number of ministers and officials attached to the hotel where he was staying overnight in Palu City, Central Sulawesi Province, on Tuesday evening, March 26 2024.
In the match which was held at My Dinh Stadium, Hanoi, Vietnam, the Indonesian national team managed to win 3 – 0 against the hosts.
The Garuda squad opened the scoring in the 9th minute through a goal scored by Jay Idzes. He managed to head the ball into the Vietnam goal using Thom Haye's corner kick.
The Indonesian national team doubled their lead in the 23rd minute through a goal scored by Ragnar Oratmangoen. He dribbled the ball into the Vietnam penalty box, before then firing a hard shot with his left foot. The 2-0 score lasted until halftime.
A goal from Ramadhan Sananta in the 90+8th minute completed the Indonesian national team's historic victory over Vietnam. Sananta managed to grab the ball from Egy Maulana Vikri's header which hit the post to break into the opponent's goal.
This is the first victory for the Indonesian national team at home to Vietnam in 20 years. At that time, the Garuda squad beat the hosts 3-0 in the group phase of the 2004 Tiger Cup, to be precise on December 11 2004.
After the match, Jokowi immediately called the General Chair of the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) Erick Thohir to congratulate him. “Congratulations, pass it on to others,” said President Jokowi in the telephone conversation.
With this result, the Indonesian national team is in second place in Group F standings with a score of 7, the result of two wins, one draw and one loss. Indonesia is 5 points adrift of leaders Iraq, who today successfully beat the Philippines by five goals without reply.
Also accompanying President Jokowi when watching the match were Minister of Public Works and Public Housing Basuki Hadimuljono, Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin, Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi, and Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman.
