This horror film is considered not educational, insults religion, and only scares people while praying.
In this film, there is a scene when the character bows and suddenly his body turns so that his head is facing upwards.
Not only the public, religious leaders, one of whom is Ustaz Hilmi Firdausi, also criticized the film 'Kibla'.
“With all due respect to Indonesian film producers, please stop making horror films like Qibla. It's not educational at all, it even makes some people afraid to pray… the same thing happened in the sequel to Makmum's film, Khanzab.” said Ustaz Hilmi Firdausi.
Filmmaker and director, Gina S Noer, also expressed her concern about the religious-themed Indonesian horror films that have been broadcast recently.
Gina S Noer believes that these films are considered exploitative of religion, especially Islam.
“Most horror films use prayer, prayer, remembrance, etc., just as cheap plot devices for jumpscares where the characters are disturbed by demons,” said Gina S Noer in a post on Instagram.
Cholil Nafis, Chair of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) for Da'wah, said that the film 'Kiblat' should not be shown in cinemas.
Cholil admitted that he didn't know the contents of the film, but highlighted the poster for the film.
“The picture is scary, the title is Qibla,” said Cholil in an Instagram post.
“I am open to the meaning of the qibla, only the Kaaba, the direction that people pray. If this is true, this film is not suitable for distribution and includes a black campaign against religious teachings, then this film should be taken down and cannot be shown,” he continued.
There has been no official response from the director or Leo Pictures regarding this criticism to date.
However, the film production team withdrew the poster and trailer for the film 'Kiblat' from circulation on Saturday (23/3).
The film 'Kiblat' tells the story of a girl named Ainun (Yasmin Napper) who lives in the village with her parents' uwa or older siblings.
He himself does not know who his biological parents are.
Ainun really admires the leader of the magical hermitage in Bumi Suwung Village named Abah Mulya.
Abah Mulya's supernatural powers are able to cure various diseases and even double your money.
Ainun and her best friend Rini (Ria Ricis) often imitate Abah Mulya's style because they feel amazed.
However, the situation changed after Abah Mulya died and he found out that Abah Mulya was Ainun's biological father.
He then found out more about Abah Mulya at his hermitage. In her search, Ainun found strange things, such as no one ever called the call to prayer and prayed.
Since then, Ainun discovered that the figure she admired and her father actually taught her heresy and kept her away from the Qibla.
Ainun then tried to break away from the misguided trend.
