Indonesian men's singles, Jonatan Christie, admitted that he only played with nothing to lose during the 2024 All England event. Because of this, he did not expect to win the title at the Super 1000 level event.
Jonatan won the title of All England 2024 champion after winning the All Indonesian Final match against Anthony Sinisuka Ginting. He won two straight games with a score of 21-15 and 21-14.
This victory was unexpected because Jonathan admitted that the process had been steep. Not only at the All England, but even one week before the competition took place.
Before the All England, Jonathan competed in the 2024 French Open with unsatisfactory results. He immediately picked up his suitcase in the round of 32 and this result made it difficult for Jonathan to accept the situation.
“Never thought about it. Coming back, from the beginning of the year even to France, one week before All England the results were far from satisfactory and it wasn't easy to get through it,” said Jonatan when met by MNC Portal Indonesia at the PBSI Cipayung National Training Center, Thursday (21/ 3/2024).
“The process is more difficult than when playing. Accepting the results is not easy,” he continued.
Because of this, when he performs at All England 2024, Jojo – Jonathan's nickname – only has to play with nothing to lose. Moreover, the opponents they have faced have been tough since the round of 32.
“But at the All England, it's better to just play with nothing to lose, to enjoy one game at a time and the opponents aren't easy either,” continued Jonatan.
On his way to the final, Jonathan met Chou Tien Chen from Taipei in the first round. Jonathan successfully won the match against his arch enemy with a landslide score of 21-4 and 21-15.
Then in the second round, he met Kunlavut Vitidsarn from Thailand who is the 2023 world champion. Jonathan overcame Kunlavut's resistance with a score of 21-19, 18-21 and 21-13.
In the quarter-finals, he defeated the world number two player, Shi Yu Qi from China with a score of 21-12, before finally withdrawing in the second game. Finally, in the semifinals, he defeated India's young star, Lakshya Sen, with a score of 21-12, 10-21 and 21-15.
“You lost 2 times against Chou Tien Chen (in the last match), the next one was against Kunlavut, the world champion, after that, Shi Yu Qi also lost 2 times. So I never really thought, oh, it seems like there's a chance to win, but never, never, said Jonathan.
