David Benavidez's promoter, Sampson Lewkowicz, believes that Saul Canelo Alvarez's asking price of USD 175 million or approximately IDR 2.7 trillion can be met. The fight will be held in Saudi Arabia in November 2024.
Lewkowicz did not say who would be the sponsor to obtain these fantastic funds. But he felt confident it could happen. He said that if Canelo (60-2-2, 39 KOs) wants $60-100 million, then a fight with Benavidez could happen in September because it doesn't require a fight promotion in six cities to drum up fight business.
The Financial Line Canelo is demanding is likely far beyond the ability of PBC or Amazon Prime PPV to pay for it. This requires Saudi Arabia to step in and provide funding. With Tyson Fury expected to get $200 million from the Saudis for his fights against Oleksandr Usyk and Anthony Joshua, there is a chance they could make the Canelo-Benavidez fight a reality.
“I'm sure he will get USD 175 million, and he will fight him. It would be a shame for boxing and destroy part of our sport if he doesn't fight Benavidez,” said Lewkowicz, quoted from Boxing News24, Saturday (23/3/2024).
“Well, now we know the price. Now we need to find money to make money, but he is very smart, a very good businessman, Canelo. I believe he deserves USD 150 million. I don't know if he will reach 200, but 150, why no? Mayweather did, and he followed Mayweather's blueprint.”
“Don't underestimate him any more. I don't know about September because if he (Benavidez) fights in June, he won't fight in September. I won't let that happen, but November is the right time to make that fight. “If he wants 150, you have to work for it. TV won't agree to three months' notice. It can't be TV. We're the promoters, but the money comes from TV, not from us,” added Lewkowicz.
