Saul Canelo Alvarez has responded to accusations that he avoided the duel against Mexican Monster David Benavidez . He said that he had done everything in his career, so he didn't need to prove anything to anyone.
“There's no pressure. I don't need to fight anyone. I don't need to prove anything to anyone. I've done everything in my career. This fight with Jaime Munguia, you have to respect it because it's more important than any other fight,” stressed Canelo was quoted from BoxingScene, Thursday (21/3/2024).
The teams of Saul Canelo Alvarez and David Benavidez accused each other of not trying to negotiate to hold the fight. Benavidez's side claims that they agreed to take a $5 million prize for the fight.
Meanwhile, Canelo's trainer, Eddie Reynoso, stated that no offers had been received. When Canelo was asked if he would fight Benavidez, he stated that the Mexican Monster had nothing to offer.
But Alvarez did not fulfill the conditions of that statement by demanding large sums of money. “You know, he brings, he doesn't bring anything to the table for me; it's just that he only brings 25 pounds more on fight night…but if he was if there was a promoter, it wouldn't be him, because he has nothing to offer me …but I one of the promoters I work with, they came and said I'm offering you I'm offering you 150 to 200 million. I'm fighting tomorrow…that's the only reason I'm fighting him,” said Canelo
Benavidez replied to the comment. The Mexican monster has been waiting patiently as the WBC Interim Super Middleweight Champion, a position he held for about two years. The WBC has not made this mandatory, and has also not decided to remove Canelo.
This forced Benavidez to make a difficult decision. He can stay at 168 and hope Canelo gives in to the pressure to fight him. The alternative is for him to move up to 175 pounds to face Oleksandr Gvozyk for the WBC Interim Light Heavyweight Title.
Meanwhile, Benavidez criticized Canelo for ducking. “Canelo, if I have nothing to offer, then why are you demanding that you get 150-200 million to fight someone who's worth nothing? Hopefully, once you make that 150 million, you'll have enough left over to buy a pair peanuts,” said Benavidez.
