Ustaz Khalid Basalamah admitted that he was surprised by the term Imsak time that exists during the Ramadan fast in Indonesia.
According to him, in Islam there is no Imsak where sahur activities must stop 20 to 25 minutes before Fajr arrives.
“I don't know where we got the term Imsak in Indonesia. This Imsak stops 20 minutes or 25 minutes before Fajr. In Islam this doesn't exist,” said Ustaz Khalid Basalamah in Denny Sumargo's YouTube video, Monday (18/3).
He explained that in Islam the rules are clear, eat and drink sahur until the Fajr call to prayer is heard.
“The hadith is clearly an authentic hadith, said Rasulullah saw. 'If you are hearing the call to prayer and you have a drink in your hand and you are chewing food, finish it',” he explained.
So what is actually meant by Imsak time?

Quoted from various sources, Imsak is a time that is considered a marker that the Ramadan fasting time has begun.
This term does not exist in Islam because it only helps us in Indonesia to remember that someone can still eat for a few more minutes before Fajr arrives.
Ustaz Abdul Somad or who is familiarly called UAS once explained that Imsak is like a yellow light, a sign that sahur will soon end.
“The two times I fasted in Morocco there was no Imsak, during sahur, I ate and ate and ate, while I was eating I heard the call to prayer, 'Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar', the food was still lodged in my mouth,” explained UAS in one of his lectures.
Imsak time can also be used to prepare ourselves, for example brushing our teeth so that when Fajr arrives, our bodies are ready to fast.
“So when Imsak can brush his teeth, then when he calls to prayer his mouth will be clean. That's the meaning of imsak, but not a red light or stop sign,” he explained.
