In the month of Ramadan, every Muslim is encouraged to perform Tarawih prayers every night. This prayer can be done in congregation or alone.
In the book The Power of Prayer and Mother's Prayer by Ummi Ayanih, the Tarawih prayer is a sunnah prayer which is performed after the Isha prayer and is more important if it is performed before the Witr prayer.
The Prophet first performed Tarawih prayers at the Nabawi Mosque in Ramadan, the second year of the Hijriah.
Reporting from the book History of Tarawih by Ahmad Zarkasih, Rasulullah called it qiyam Ramadan, meaning the livelihood of Ramadan nights or worship carried out to liven up the nights of Ramadan.
The procedure for praying Tarawih alone at home is not much different from praying in congregation at the mosque. The following is the procedure for praying Tarawih prayers at home and the readings.
Procedures for Praying Tarawih Alone at Home
Based on the book Complete Guide to 99 Super Complete Sunnah Prayers by Ibnu Watiniyah, Tarawih prayers themselves are the same as congregational Tarawih prayers, only the difference lies in the intention.
Tarawih Prayer Intentions
The following are the intentions for Tarawih prayers.
I pray the Sunnah of Tarawih, two rak'ahs, facing the Qiblah to God Almighty.
Arabic-Latin: Ushalli sunnatat tarawih rak'ataini mustaqbilal qiblati lillahi ta'ala
Meaning: “I intend to pray two rakats of Tarawih prayers for Allah Ta'ala.”
According to a hadith narrated from Aisyah RA, Rasulullah performed 8 rak'ahs of Tarawih prayers and followed it with 3 rak'ahs of Witr. This hadith has become a topic of debate among scholars regarding its quality.
Quoted from the PAI Anthology book by Suhardi, during the time of Caliph Umar bin Khattab, the Tarawih prayer was performed for 20 rak'ahs with two rak'ahs of greetings each and ending with the Witr prayer.
The number of rakats of the Tarawih prayer is odd, namely 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11.
The procedure for performing the 8 rakat Tarawih prayers independently is:
1. Read the intention of the Tarawih prayer silently
2. Takbiratul ihram
3. Reading surah Al-Fatihah
4. Continue by reading one of the short surahs of the Koran
5. Bow
6. Moderation
7. The first prostration
8. Sitting between two prostrations
9. Second prostration
10. Sit and rest for a moment before getting up to do the second rak'ah
11. Rise from sitting, then do the second rak'ah with the same movements as the first rak'ah
12. Salam on the second rakat
13. Repeat the same movement up to three times or 8 rakaat
