Gilberto Ramirez defeated Arsen Goulamirian on his way to becoming a legendary boxer.
That goal can be achieved on March 30 when he fights WBA cruiserweight champion Arsen Goulamirian at the YouTube Theater in Inglewood, California, broadcast on DAZN.
Gilberto Ramirez is a former WBO super middleweight champion. He successfully defended the title five times after defeating Arthur Abraham in 2016 to win the title before moving up a division and moving from the promoter who brought him the world title, Top Rank Inc. In 2021, he signed with Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions (his current promoter). Ramirez collected three knockout wins which opened his world title fight in the light heavyweight class against Dmitry Bivol.
Bivol knocked out Ramirez in 2022. Ramirez had weight issues for his scheduled fight against Gabriel Rosado that forced the fight's cancellation, but he returned in October against Joe Smith Jr. in cruiserweight.
The fight between the two in this division will be a title fight. “(I will) become a world champion,” Ramirez said.
Goulamirian (27-0, 19 KOs) won his title nearly six years ago. Since then, he has made four defenses with all of his fights taking place in France. He has famous faces involved with him – Abel Sanchez, legendary trainer Terry Norris and Gennadiy Golovkin. Sanchez stated to those who don't know about Goulamirian that he has a style that is very appealing to fans. Ramirez, in a press conference, echoed that sentiment.
“We're going to give the fans what they want – a really good fight,” Ramirez said.
“I'm really excited for this fight,” Goulamirian said. “Fighting in America for the first time, (it's) a big opportunity for me, because Ramirez is a big name.”
Given that Ramirez has had weight issues in his previous fights – and that he is 189.2cm tall, Ramirez was asked about his comfort at cruiserweight.
“I walk around weighing about 97.5 kg,” Ramirez said. “I feel comfortable, I don't need to lose weight.”
Becoming a two-division world champion is one step closer to the ultimate goal of “Zurdo.” “This is one (step) closer to becoming a legend, and that's what I want,” Ramirez said
