JAKARTA – Apple has used Apple Maps as the default digital map application for iOS for years. Along with many protests from a number of parties, this application will be replaced by Google Maps.
As reported by Mashable on Wednesday (13/3/2024), later Apple device users can make Google Maps the default digital map application for iOS. Users can set it independently.
The news comes from a report Apple released last week, which details how the company is preparing to comply with the EU's new Big Tech regulations known as the Digital Markets Act (DMA).
Apple mentioned the change to the default maps app in a sentence first noticed by AndroidCentral. “Apple also plans to introduce new default controls for users in Settings for navigation apps,” the document reads.
Apple says it is working to make it available by March 2025. It's unclear whether Apple will roll out this feature to change the default maps app for all users. However, it will definitely be available to users in the EU, as new laws require it.
Apple's timeframe for rolling out this feature appears to be in line with its rollout in a future iOS 18 update. The company will likely launch a beta version of the latest iOS in June for developers, followed by a public release in September.
