Special Prosecutor Robert Hur will testify today before a committee of the House of Representatives, on his report in the framework of investigations into the unauthorized keeping of secret documents by President Joe Biden.
Mr. Hur, a former prosecutor in Maryland during the administration of Republican President Donald Trump, led a 15-month investigation into classified documents found in President Biden's home.
In February, Prosecutor Hur published a report in which he said that he has decided not to press charges against Mr. Biden and that it would be difficult for him to be convicted. Mr. Hur describes the president as an “old man with good intentions and a weak memory”.
The US press has published parts of the prepared speech that the US attorney is expected to read at the opening of his testimony to the Republican-led congressional committee.
“The assessment I make in relation to the president's memory was necessary, accurate and fair”, writes Mr. Hur in the introductory speech, according to the US media. “I expressed myself as I saw things. I have not denigrated the president unfairly. I explained to the Attorney General the decision and the reasons why I reached it. This was what was required of me.”
President Biden's administration called the report politically motivated ahead of the November election. 81-year-old Biden is seeking a second term. Donald Trump, 77, is the front-runner to win the Republican presidential nomination.
After the report was released, Republicans said it was evidence of an unequal justice system. In June, former President Trump was sued over secret documents found in his home.
According to prosecutors, Mr. Trump tried to hide the classified documents in his Florida home and discussed with his lawyers how to lie to government authorities so they wouldn't find the documents. Mr. Trump describes the accusations as politically motivated.
