SYDNEY – A Boeing 787 Dreamliner with 278 people on board operated by LATAM Airlines suddenly “free-falled” in the air while on a flight from Sydney to Auckland on Monday.
Although the plane managed to land safely, the pilot made the shocking claim that he lost “gauges” and “all ability to fly the plane”.
Twelve passengers were hospitalized and dozens more were injured after the horrific incident on board LATAM Airlines flight LA800.
The plane suddenly “free-falls” from a dramatic height in the air. An ambulance rushed to Auckland airport before 16.00 local time.
The Chilean airline said an unspecified “technical problem” caused “strong movements” in the air.
The incident caused passengers to be thrown from their seats onto the cabin ceiling, with some of them covered in blood.
Video from inside the plane showed passengers in distress helping each other after the incident and some holding their heads.
According to officials, 50 people were treated at the scene by the St John Ambulance organization and 12 people were transported to hospital.
“This plane, without warning, just crashed. “I mean, the plane crashed like I've ever experienced in any small amount of turbulence, and people were thrown out of their seats, hit the roof of the plane, thrown into the aisle,” said one passenger, Brian Jokat, to the BBC, as reported on Tuesday ( 12/3/2024).
