Throughout the month of Ramadhan, it is not uncommon for us to eat before breakfast time because we wake up late. So that this doesn't always happen, mothers need to know the correct deadline for sahur.
Muslims are advised to prepare their energy by eating sahur. The content of the food you consume also needs to be considered in order to meet nutritional needs.
The time for sahur is usually from 2 in the morning until the deadline for sahur arrives. This final limit is called imsak. Imsak time is usually marked by the sound of sirens played by the mosques around Mother's house. If the sound of the imsak siren is heard, it is believed that the meal of sahur must end immediately.

Knowing Sahur and its Specialties
Before discussing imsak, let's first find out more fully about sahur and the privileges it has according to Islam.
When intending to fast in Ramadan, Muslims are advised to do sahur in the early hours of the morning before dawn. As the Prophet SAW in the narration of Bukhari, encouraged his people to eat suhoor:
“Have breakfast, because there is indeed a blessing in the breakfast.” (HR. Bukhari)
Sahur is a supply of energy. Provisions that help reduce hunger and thirst in the body. Eating sahur will also maintain the need to balance the amount of nutrients the body needs. So, we remain energetic in our activities throughout the fasting day until it is time to break the fast.
Not only is it beneficial for personal safety and health, breaking the fast is also an act of worship full of blessings. This is conveyed in a hadith narrated by Ahmad, from Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri, the Prophet SAW said:
“Eating sahur is a meal full of blessings. Do not leave it even with a sip of water because Allah and His angels bless those who eat sahur.” (HR. Ahmad).
In addition, the time of breaking fast is also a time where we can ask Allah SWT for forgiveness and pray for all requests and desires. During suhoor, Allah SWT will raise the prayer of His servant, as in QS Ali Imran verse 17:
The patient, the truthful, the steadfast, the spenders, and those who seek forgiveness at dawn.
Meaning: “(Namely) those who are patient, who are righteous, who remain obedient, who spend their wealth (in the way of Allah), and who ask for forgiveness at dawn.” (QS Ali 'Imran: 17)
Sahur worship is also a behavior that emulates the nature of the Prophet SAW. When there is a servant who obeys the teachings of Rasulullah SAW then he equally obeys the command of Allah SWT, and there will be abundant rewards for him.
Even so, sahur is not an obligation that needs to be done throughout the month of Ramadan. According to the four major schools of Islam: Shafi'i, Maliki, Hanafi, and Hambali, the rule of fasting is a sunnah recommended by the Prophet. Which if done, will get many blessings and priority.
Therefore, it is highly recommended for Muslims to eat sahur every morning during the month of Ramadan. Apart from physical strength reasons, sahur also plays a role in increasing your sense of faith while the fast continues until the end.
Getting to know Imsak
The deadline for eating at dawn is usually called imsak. Quoting from the book Fasting, Not Just During Ramadhan by Ahmad Sarwat, imsak is refraining from eating, drinking and other things that break the fast, from dawn to sunset. As in the words of Allah SWT below:
And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread of dawn.
Meaning: “Eat and drink until the white thread becomes clear to you from the black thread, namely dawn.” (QS. Al-Baqarah: 187)
The expiration date for sahur is usually reminded 10 minutes before the dawn call to prayer. Most Muslims believe that they need to stop to chew food or take a sip of a drink in front of them. This is because of the belief that fasting begins at the same time as the imsak warning as the deadline for sahur.
Sahur, with its many virtues and privileges, will certainly provide greater and maximum blessings, if done within a certain time.
Quoting from the book Fiqhun-Nisa Shiyam-Zakat-Haji by Adil Sa'di, it is stated that there is the best time for Muslims to perform sahur. According to the words of Rasulullah SAW, it is believed that one third of the night until dawn is the best time to make sahur.
Narrated in the hadith of Ahmad's history, the Messenger of Allah said: “My people are in goodness as long as they hasten to break the fast and end the suhoor.” (HR. Ahmad).
If you do sahur too early, far from the time of imsak, your energy will be used up quickly and run out when the fast continues. The body will quickly become weak and will not be enthusiastic about activities and worship during the day. However, it is also not recommended to have sahur at a time that is too close to Imsak. This causes us to eat in a hurry, and can actually cause digestive disorders.
Quoting from the book The Nature of Prophetic Fasting and 20 Brief Practices in the Month of Ramadhan by Dr. Raehanul Bahraen, M.Sc., Sp.PK, it explains a time period that is used as the best time for sahur.
In the book, it is said that the best time to have sahur is the time before imsak. This is supported by the hadith narrated by Bukhari about the confession of Zaid bin Thabit on the length of time he spent fasting and praying with the Messenger of Allah:
Anas ra on the authority of Zaid bin Thabit ra said, “We ate suhoor with the Prophet SAW, then he prayed (dawn), then I asked, 'How long is between the call to prayer and suhoor?' He said, '(It is) about 50 verses.” (HR. Bukhari IV/118, Muslim no. 1097).
Not only the recommendation of the Prophet's behavior, having sahur before imsak is also a way to further shorten the fasting time, and also keep the energy and nutrition of food in the body for longer.
Frequently Asked Questions and Answers Regarding Sahur and Imsak
The following is a collection of questions and answers about sahur and imsak which we hope will answer your questions.
Can you still eat sahur after Imsak?
If your mother and family are late for suhoor from the time it should be, and only wake up after imsak time, is it still permissible to have suhoor after imsak?
The answer is yes. Because as explained in several hadiths above, the time of imsak is not a marker for the start of fasting, but only a reminder that the morning call to prayer will sound. So, only then does the morning call to prayer begin.
Therefore, if you and your family just wake up at Imsak time, it is still permissible to at least fill your stomach with the food and drink you have.
Rules for eating and drinking after imsak
Although it is allowed to eat and drink after imsak comes, it is important to know that there are provisions that apply. Eating and drinking after imsak should not be done deliberately and repeatedly. This makes the value of the blessing of fasting will decrease and misinterprets the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah about breaking the fast before dawn.
When is the final time for eating sahur?
Many people think that imsak time is the final limit for eating at sahur. However, this needs to be straightened out. The limit for sahur when you want to fast is when the morning call to prayer sounds.
If we oversleep at dawn during the imsak, we are still allowed to eat and drink. However, if the sound of the morning call to prayer is heard, then it is obligatory to stop sahur, if you intend to fast that day. This is because the fasting time actually begins when the muezzin gives the morning call to prayer at dawn.
Is it permissible to have sahur after the morning call to prayer because you woke up late?
As explained above, fasting time begins when the dawn call to prayer is resounded. Therefore, it is not permissible for a Muslim who wakes up in the morning, to have suhoor after the dawn call to prayer. Fasting that he observes will be canceled directly and counted as fasting debt. So, he has to pay the qadha fast later in the day after Ramadan ends.
Is it still possible to eat suhoor at dawn?
When the morning call to prayer is heard and heard, a devout Muslim must immediately stop eating and drinking at dawn. This is because the morning call to prayer marks the start of fasting.
How is it legal to still eat sahur during the morning call to prayer?
From the explanation above, it is clear that still eating for sahur when the morning call to prayer has already sounded is haram. The fast that is carried out will not be counted as valid because it has been canceled from the start. So, it is very necessary for Muslims to wake up at an earlier time for sahur, in order to avoid unauthorized fasting like this.
