BEIJING – President Joe Biden is ready to sign a DPR bill that requires TikTok owners to sell the popular video sharing application. This was his strongest form of support for the proposal.
“If they pass it, I will sign it,” Biden told reporters on Friday (08/03/2024) before flying on Air Force One to campaign in Pennsylvania.
The bill, which passed in a House committee on Thursday (07/03/2024), requires TikTok's parent company, ByteDance Ltd, to divest ownership in the company or risk being removed from US app stores. Steve Scalise, the No. 2 Republican in the House, said afterward he would bring it to a vote.
The White House offered broad support for the measure earlier this week, but stopped short of saying Biden would sign it.
“This law has a predetermined outcome: namely a total ban on TikTok in the US. The administration seeks to strip 170 million Americans of their constitutional right to freedom of expression.” Someone stated it
A TikTok spokesperson said the move would “cost businesses millions, stifle creativity and destroy the livelihoods of countless content creators across the country.
