WASHINGTON – Donald Trump defeated Nikki Haley in the North Dakota caucus on Monday (4/3/2024). Haley is Trump's last remaining rival for this year's Republican presidential nomination.
Trump received more than 84% of the vote, according to the AP. This was an overwhelming victory because any candidate who won more than 60% would receive the votes of all 29 state delegations under North Dakota rules.
The former US president now has 273 delegates compared to Haley's 43, which puts him in a better position to clinch the 2024 Republican presidential nomination for the November election.
Trump remains ahead even after Haley's victory in the Washington DC primary on Sunday.
Trump's success on Monday came just after the US Supreme Court overturned a Colorado Supreme Court decision that ruled Trump could not serve again as president over his alleged encouragement of the Capitol Hill riots in 2021.
Under Article 3 of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, people who previously held government office but later “engaged in rebellion” should be prohibited from running for various offices.
The Supreme Court said states cannot determine whether a presidential candidate or other candidate for federal office is ineligible.
Both of Trump's wins on Monday, in the courts and in North Dakota, came ahead of this week's primaries known as Super Tuesday, when millions of Americans are expected to vote in 15 states and territories.
The former president, who has won eight of nine primaries so far, is expected to dominate the vote, as he leads by wide margins in opinion polls both nationally and in states that go to the polls on Tuesday.
Recent polls show Trump has about 80% support in Texas, 70% support in California, and 65% support in Virginia.
