Meta, Tuesday (5/3), investigated widespread disruption on the Facebook, Instagram and Threads platforms. The disruption caused users around the world to be unable to access their accounts.
“We know that people have been unable to access our services. We're working on that now,” Meta spokesman Andy Stone said in a post on X.
According to the DownDetector website, reports that Facebook was inaccessible reached a peak of around 500,000 at 10:30 US East Coast time. At the same time, Instagram-related reports peaked at around 70,000.
Threads, a Twitter rival launching in 2023, received reports of outages as well. However, WhatsApp, Meta's messaging service, appears to have avoided disruption.
Facebook's status page, aimed at advertisers, said the site was experiencing a “major outage” and “the technical team is actively working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.”
Users who try to access Facebook are asked to provide a password. However, they still don't access social media even though they have used the correct password. On Instagram, mobile users saw their posts not updating.
According to the latest data, Facebook is the largest social media platform in the world with three billion monthly active users. Meanwhile, Instagram has around 1.35 billion users. (ka/lt)
