SAN SEBASTIAN – Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) striker, Kylian Mbappe, is the temporary top scorer in the Champions League after helping his team qualify for the quarter-finals of the 2023/2024 Champions League. This certainty was obtained after Les Parisiens – PSG's nickname – successfully defeated Real Sociedad.
PSG stole a 2-1 victory over Los Txuri-Urdin – Real Sociedad's nickname – in the second leg of the last 16 of the 2023/2024 Champions League. The match took place at Real Sociedad headquarters, Anoeta Stadium, San Sebastian, Spain, Wednesday (6/3/2024) early morning WIB.
PSG's two winning goals were scored through Mbappe's brace (15' and 56'). Meanwhile, one goal for the hosts was contributed by Mikel Merino in the final minutes, or to be precise, the 89th minute. The score of two goals made Mbappe named the best player.
Mbappe is also listed as the top scorer (top scorer) in the Champions League with a score of 6 goals. The number of goals is equal to Harry Kane who scored a brace when Bayern Munich beat Lazio with a score of 3-0.
After the match, Mbappe admitted that he was very happy because he could achieve his target of winning at home to Real Sociedad. According to him, PSG is also not under too much pressure from the hosts.
“We are very happy. That is the goal. We want to qualify, but we also want to win,” said Mbappe, quoted from the official UEFA website, Wednesday (6/3/2024).
“We had a clear game plan, and we managed to score early. We didn't have too much pressure, just a little at the end,” he continued.
Mbappe was satisfied because Les Parisiens succeeded in suppressing Real Sociedad in front of their own public. The French passport player was very happy to be able to bring PSG through to the quarter-finals.
“We knew straight away that we couldn't sleep. If they opened the scoring, they would keep going with the support of their fans,” he said.
“We had to dampen their hopes early on. That's what we did, and we are very happy to be back in the quarter-finals,” he continued.
PSG secured their place in the quarter-finals with a 4-1 aggregate win over Real Sociedad. Regarding the opponents that Les Parisiens will face in that round, it will still be drawn first on April 15 2024.
