Shehbaz Sharif was sworn in as Pakistan's new prime minister on Monday (4/3) at a ceremony in Islamabad.
Lawmakers in Pakistan's National Assembly on Sunday voted for Sharif to return as the country's prime minister, while former prime minister Imran Khan's allies in parliament protested, alleging fraud in last month's election.
Parliament speaker Ayaz Sadiq said Sharif won 201 votes, beating Omar Ayub of the Sunni Ittehad Council who won 92 votes. The winner only needs 169 votes to get a majority.
Sharif held the position of prime minister from April 2022 to August 2023. He is the younger brother of prime minister Nawaz Sharif who served three times.
Khan is serving prison terms in several cases. He is prohibited from running for office or holding office.
Sharif replaced him as prime minister after Khan was removed in a vote of no confidence in parliament in April 2022. (uh/ab)
