Looking back, Crimea is known as a conflict-ridden region and is often hit by civil wars. Quoting VoA, this region is recorded as having been colonized and occupied by various nations in the world in its history.
Around the 13th century, Crimea was occupied by the Tatars, a Turkic-speaking Muslim community who were part of the Golden Horde. Previously, this region was also a vassal state of the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century.

After the 1917 Russian Revolution, Crimea became the scene of brutal fighting between the forces of the Bolshevik Tsar. After the Bolshevik victory, its territory was made part of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR).
In 1944, Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin deported the Crimean Tatar population to Central Asia and a number of other regions. This was due to their alleged existence as Nazi collaborators.
