WASHINGTON – Elon Musk, the billionaire founder of Tesla and SpaceX, has angered the leaders of NATO countries. The reason is that he expressed his astonishment at the military alliance which had to continue to exist even though its enemy had disbanded.
“Always wondered why NATO continues to exist even though its enemy and reason for existence, the Warsaw Pact, has disbanded,” Musk wrote in X on Saturday last week.
The enemy that Musk means is none other than the Soviet Union, a country that dissolved in 1991 and its current successor is Russia.
Musk has given Ukraine Starlink satellites to improve communications ahead of the start of the war against the Russian invasion.
But he also called for a peace deal that would potentially cede parts of Ukraine to Russia and opposed Western military aid to Kyiv.
Musk's comments on X have been slammed by critics, including leaders of NATO countries.
Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs responded strongly to Musk's comments on ).
NATO is a military alliance between the United States, Canada and several European countries.
Article 5 of the NATO Charter states: “An attack against one Ally is considered an attack against all Allies”. That means an attack on a NATO country could elicit a military response from other member countries.
