Devin Haney reveals the role of Floyd Mayweather Jr. when messing up the initial plans for the duel with Ryan Garcia. At that time, WBC super lightweight champion Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia began negotiations in December 2023.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. involved and influenced Ryan Garcia to fight against Rolando Romero, the WBA 63.5 kg title holder who is contracted to Mayweather Promotions.
Ryan Garcia complied with the request and told his team to focus on the fight against Romero. Decision then changed his stance and signed a deal to fight Isaac Cruz on March 30th.
Stuck alone at the altar, Garcia restarted negotiations with former undisputed lightweight world champion Devin Haney (31-0, 15 KOs). He quickly signed a deal to fight Haney on April 20 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, via DAZN live broadcast.
Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) added fuel to the promotional fire this week by releasing nine-year-old sparring footage showing a 16-year-old Haney wrestling Gervonta Davis at Mayweather's gym. The edited one minute and forty-three second clip shows the four year older Davis dominating Haney as Mayweather referees the match.
An upset Haney finally hit back Friday on social media with a counterattack aimed at Mayweather. “Floyd has been hating for a long time,” Haney wrote.
“This hasn't just started. I held back for years because I respect the great fighters in this sport. However, he is a true hater who doesn't want to see anyone win if he isn't a part of it! I know he shipped Ryan (footage of) sparring… I know he made a 'pimp' comment to Ryan (at the press conference). That pathetic old man tried (initially) to stop the fight. Thank God, I'm glad he revealed himself to the world.”
Soon after making the statement, Haney also posted an edited photo on Instagram carrying a torch with Mayweather behind him and called it the “Haney Era.”
