NEW YORK – Who would have thought that a cellphone flash has a more useful function than just providing light. A mother from England said that she managed to detect a rare cancer suffered by her infant son using only this feature.
This happened when the mother, Sarah Hedges, was cooking dinner for her family and noticed something strange in the eyes of her 3-month-old son. Where he saw there was a kind of white light in his son's eyes.
Hedges then used a cellphone flash to confirm his findings. He then saw something reflecting light like a cat's eye so he tried browsing on Google, as quoted by the New York Post.
Google search results show that the child may have cancer. Hedges then contacted the doctor and shared his findings and referred him to Medway Hospital where it was confirmed that the baby had cancer.
“During the examination, the doctor called us into his room to discuss the results. But at that time I was in the toilet and when I entered his room, the doctor delivered the bad news that my child had cancer,” said Hedges.
Hospital doctors said Hedges' son suffered from retinoblastoma, a rare and aggressive form of eye cancer that affects babies and young children. He was then referred to the Royal London Hospital and underwent six rounds of chemotherapy.
“We are grateful that in Thomas' case, his symptoms were recognized so he could receive treatment,” concluded Hedges.
