Suara.com – Minister of Communication and Information (Kominfo) Budi Arie Setiadi has just had a meeting with the Secretary General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Doreen Bogdan-Martin and the Director of the ITU Radio Communications Bureau Mario Maniewicz.
The meeting with international telecommunications organizations was held to discuss efforts to accelerate the completion of discussions on documents for the use of orbital slots (filling) for the CAKRA-1 maritime satellite.
Budi Arie explained that this was intended as an effort by the Indonesian Government to optimize satellites in monitoring national maritime resources.
“Regarding Indonesia's concern about carrying out digital transformation. We need to get support from international institutions. “ITU is committed to continuing to help Indonesia in carrying out digital transformation,” he said after a bilateral meeting with ITU on the sidelines of the 2024 Mobile World Congress at Fira Gran Via, Barcelona, Spain, Wednesday (28/02/2024).
The Minister of Communication and Information stated that one form of support that is expected is in the form of submitting a CAKRA-1 satellite filling which will be used to monitor Indonesia's maritime conditions by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries.
“Indonesia is requesting ITU's assistance to speed up the evaluation and publication process for the CAKRA-1 satellite, so that it is in line with the CAKRA-1 launch schedule which is targeted at the end of June 2024,” he continued.
Budi Arie explained that the CAKRA-1 satellite is a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Satellite which will be used for various purposes such as fishermen and fisheries. He emphasized that satellite technology breakthroughs need to be optimized to support the development of the national maritime sector.
“We are an archipelagic country, our seas are wide, so we really need satellite-based communication facilities and infrastructure. “We will follow up again,” he added.
Discussion regarding satellite filing with ITU is an administrative step required in accordance with ITU standard procedures so that the KKP satellite can be launched and protected. The Ministry of Communication and Information is trying to assist the launch of CAKRA-1 scheduled for June 28 2024.
The CAKRA satellite will consist of several satellite units and will technically be discussed at the next meeting between the Ministry of Communication and Information and ITU.
During the meeting, ITU Secretary General Doreen Bogdan-Martin also asked Indonesia to host the 2025 World Telecommunication Development Conference (WTDC), which will be attended by approximately 1,200 people.
“This also includes asking Indonesia to host the 2025 World Telecommunication Development Conference. We'll have a meeting later,” explained Budi Arie.
