TOKYO – Japanese police have arrested an Indonesian woman (WNI) on suspicion of abandoning her newborn baby to death.
The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) on Thursday (29/2/2024) said it would provide consular assistance to the person concerned.
The Indonesian citizen named Jihan Pramudita (20) is recorded as living in Onomichi City, Hiroshima. He was arrested by police last Monday.
According to police information, Jihan Pramudita, who works as a nanny, was arrested for allegedly abandoning a newborn baby in the company dormitory between February 23 and February 25, 2024.
Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Lalu Muhamad Iqbal said that the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia (KJRI) Osaka had received information about an Indonesian citizen named JP, an intern in Hiroshima who was detained by the Onomichi Police, Hiroshima Prefecture because he was suspected of neglecting a newly born child until it died.
“Following up on this information, the Indonesian Consulate General in Osaka has communicated with the Onomichi Police and related parties, including the LPK (job training institution) in Indonesia as the sender and recipient in Japan,” said Iqbal in his written statement.
According to Iqbal, currently the Onomichi Police are still carrying out an investigation process to determine the legal status of the person concerned.
“Based on the Privacy Act, the Onomichi Police still refuse to provide more detailed information because they have not obtained approval from JP,” he said.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Indonesian Consulate General in Osaka will continue to monitor this case and will provide consular assistance if JP grants permission and access.”
