JAKARTA – Protelindo Group, a group of companies engaged in telecommunications infrastructure and internet service providers in Indonesia, announced its support for the Javan leopard (Panthera pardus melas) conservation project run by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry in collaboration with the Indonesian SINTAS Foundation.
The start of this program was marked by the Java-Wide Leopard Survey Kick-Off Meeting, which was held in the Rimbawan I Room, Manggala Wanabakti Forestry Center Building, Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Newsdelivers.com, on February 27 2024.
Prof. Dr. Satyawan Pudyatmoko, S.Hut., M.Sc., as Director General of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation (KSDAE) stated that all sectors need to take part because this national survey is very important, considering that wildlife management must start with an inventory comprehensive data so that we can develop appropriate follow-up programs to deal with very complex problems related to the population of this top predator.
The Ministry of Environment and Forestry together with the SINTAS Indonesia Foundation are now collaborating with several related parties, one of which is the Protelindo Group to continue the leopard conservation project through survey activities and collecting Javan leopard scat samples to determine the population structure of Javan leopards and their prey preferences.
Overall, this collaborative project will cover 21 natural landscapes spread across all areas of Java. The joint conservation project with Protelindo Group will focus on leopard conservation in the Mount Ijen and Mount Raung landscape locations, East Java, and will be implemented for approximately 2 years, starting from January 2024 to December 2025.
Protelindo Group is committed to contributing to supporting efforts to preserve these protected wild animals. Apart from aiming to map the population structure of the Javan leopard and the preferences of its prey, this project also aims to produce accurate basic data on the population status and preferences of the Javan leopard's prey based on strong scientific principles.
“We believe that environmental sustainability is a shared responsibility. Through support for this Javanese leopard conservation project, Protelindo Group hopes to make a positive contribution in preserving Indonesia's biodiversity for future generations, especially that the Javan leopard is a species included in “Trophic Cascade, the sustainability of which will have a broad impact on the ecosystem,” said Deputy President Director of Protelindo, Adam Gifari in a press statement, Tuesday (27/2/2024).
This basic data will be used in a population survival study (Population Viability Analysis) of the Javan leopard in the context of updating the Javanese leopard Conservation Strategy and Action Plan document.
Apart from the Javan leopard as the main target, through this project data will also be obtained on other terrestrial biodiversity and its distribution throughout the remaining wildlife habitats on the island of Java.
Protelindo Group's participation in conservation efforts spearheaded by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry is an important step in efforts to conserve the Javan leopard.
