In recent times, intermittent fasting has become quite a popular diet choice. Not a few people claim to have succeeded in reducing their body weight thanks to limiting eating periods.
Unfortunately, according to Dr. Martha Rosana, SpPD from the Endocrine, Metabolic and Diabetes Division, Department of Internal Medicine, RSUPN Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo-Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia, not everyone is suitable for following an intermittent fasting diet.
“Intermittent fasting is actually safe for many people, but not everyone. So there are several groups for whom fasting or intermittent fasting is not safe,” said Dr. Martha in an online webinar, Saturday (25/2/2024).

According to him, intermittent fasting or what is known as a fasting diet is effective in reducing body weight because it reduces calorie intake and helps control feelings of hunger until full. The intermittent fasting diet can actually improve a person's metabolism, including blood pressure, blood sugar levels, and cholesterol.
However, those who suffer from GERD or gastritis, pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and diabetes patients are not advised to follow this type of diet. Likewise with patients with kidney disease, advanced liver disease, and even patients with a history of uncontrolled comorbidities.
“Because of course this group must meet their nutritional needs. This group is not advised to fast until they are completely fit,” said Dr. Martha.
Dr. Martha explained that those who are at risk of experiencing health problems while on an intermittent fasting diet should first consult a doctor. This is to ensure that the diet process does not interfere with the patient's nutritional needs and medication use.
In conclusion, the intermittent fasting diet is still categorized as safe, except for people with comorbidities in order to reduce the risks that may arise during a fasting diet.
