As the Biden administration attempts to curb the number of migrants entering illegally through the southern border region, the United States expanded visa restrictions for transportation operators who “facilitate unauthorized migration” on Wednesday (21/2).
According to a written statement by the US Department of State, these visa restrictions will now also be aimed at “owners, executives and senior officials of charter airlines, ground transportation and maritime companies, which provide transportation services designed for use, primarily by people who intend to migrate illegally to the United States.”
Last November, the department announced visa restrictions targeting individuals operating charter flights to Nicaragua for migrants headed for the U.S.-Mexico border.
The increasing number of migrants seeking to cross the US border through Mexico has become a major issue, as President Joe Biden seeks re-election.
His rival, former President Donald Trump, made this issue the main issue in his campaign to attack Biden. (ti/em/hour)
