JAKARTA – The tornado that devastated the Rancaekek area, Bandung Regency and parts of the Sumedang area on Wednesday (21/2/2024) afternoon is said to be similar to those that usually appear in the United States (US).
According to climatology expert at the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Erma Yulihastin, the characteristics of tornadoes that appear in Rancaekek are the same as those that usually occur in the northern hemisphere, USA with a similarity level of 99.99%.
“The structure of the Rancaekek tornado, Indonesia, is compared to tornadoes that usually occur in the northern hemisphere, United States. It is 99.99% similar, aka bingits!,” he said in a tweet on X's social media.
It was further revealed that this tornado is different from a tornado, where a tornado has a higher wind strength scale and a wider radius with a minimum wind speed of up to 70 km/hour, while a tornado only has 56 km/hour.
“Apart from that, it's also the duration. In the case of tornadoes which usually occur in Indonesia, only about 5-10 minutes is already very long. There was only one unusual case when a tornado occurred for 20 minutes in Cimenyan in 2021,” he added. .
Erma himself admitted that he would carry out an in-depth investigation to find out more details about the tornado. The investigation will be carried out by studying the chronology of photos and videos circulating from the public and media.
“We, a team of researchers from BRIN, will immediately reconstruct and investigate the Rancaekek tornado today (21/2). The chronology of photos and videos from the public and the media will really help researchers in documenting this extreme event which was recorded as the first tornado,” he said.
For your information, the tornado that appeared in Rancaekek was in the form of a dark colored wind vortex. Its appearance caused panic among residents considering that quite a few buildings were damaged and in several videos you could see how the rubble was lifted.
