According to a Harvard study, the word “because” can help you change someone's mind.
Jonah Berger, a marketing professor at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, compiled a list of “magic words” that can change the way a person communicates. Using the word “because” when trying to convince someone to do something produces interesting results, according to Berger.
“More people will listen to you, and do what you want using the word,” Berger tells CNBC Make It.
Berger pointed to a nearly 50-year-old study from Harvard University, in which researchers sat in the university library and waited for someone to use the photocopier. Then, they walked up and asked to cut the paper in front of participants who didn't know them.
They phrased their request in three different ways:
“Can I use a Xerox machine?” “Can I use a Xerox machine because I have to make copies?” “Can I use the Xerox machine because I'm in a hurry?”
Both requests using the word “because” made people who had already made a copy more than 50 percent more likely to comply, the researchers found.
Even the second phrase, which can be reinterpreted as “Can I step in front of you to do the same thing you do?”, proved effective. Because that sentence shows that the stranger asking for help is at least considering it, according to the study.
“Persuasion is not driven by reason itself,” Berger wrote in his book on the topic “Magic Words,” published last year. “It is driven by the power of words.”
