LONDON – Two Russian Tu-95MS nuclear bombers maneuvered over the Norwegian Sea near England on Monday. Their presence prompted NATO countries to deploy two fighter jets for an interception mission.
The maneuvers of a pair of TU-95MS aircraft were accompanied by a fleet of Russian Su-35S fighter jets.
The Kremlin confirmed the appearance of two fighter jets deployed by NATO countries, but did not specify which countries were in question.
According to a Mail Online report, a London defense source said that the UK's Royal Air Force (RAF) did not launch any aircraft in response to the fly-over by Russian military planes.
The Norwegian Sea borders England to the south, Iceland to the west, Norway to the east, and the Greenland Sea to the north.
“The flight was carried out in accordance with international rules for the use of airspace,” said Lieutenant General Sergei Kobylash, commander of Russia's long-range aviation, as quoted by Express, Tuesday (13/2/2024).
“Long-haul flight pilots regularly fly over the neutral waters of the Arctic, North Atlantic, Pacific Ocean, Black Sea and Baltic Sea.”
The bomber maneuvers near NATO countries occurred when the general of Poland, a country also a member of the alliance, stated that his country must have nuclear weapons.
Russia's invasion of Ukraine has led Brigadier General Jaroslaw Kraszewski of the Polish Armed Forces to discuss the need for his country to arm itself with nuclear weapons.
