DAMASCUS – The United States (US) base in the Al-Omar oil field in Deir ez-Zor province, eastern Syria, was shelled, and the sound of explosions could be heard from there.
A local source explained the news to Sputnik. “The American base in the Al-Omar oil field has been hit with four rockets,” the source said.
He added that explosions at the base had been heard after the shooting.
US helicopters were deployed after the shooting, according to the source.
The US continues to maintain troops in oil-rich Syria even though the action is illegal under international law.
Many people say that the US is stealing Syrian oil illegally in that country. Syria often protests the illegal presence of US troops in the country.
“The United Nations has an obligation to hold the United States accountable for the looting of Syria's oil resources which caused losses of USD 115 billion to Damascus,” stressed Deputy Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs Bassam Sabbah.
“Our latest statistics show that the total value of direct and indirect losses to the oil sector in Syria has exceeded USD 115 billion. “We believe that the UN is obliged to hold the United States accountable and ask it to return this looted money to Syria,” said Bassam during a speech at the UN General Assembly.
Bassam's statement came when discussing the illegal military presence of the US and Turkey in Syrian territory which violates its national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
According to Bassam, the foreign troops supported a number of separatist militias and terrorist groups.
The Syrian official also condemned the “infiltration” by some Western political and military officials, among others, into the occupied territories of the country, which disregards Syria's sovereignty.
“This is glaring interference in domestic affairs,” said Bassam.
