Jaime Munguia KOs John Ryder, Bernard Hopkins: He's Comfortable in the 76.2 Kg Class/Boxing Scene
Jaime Munguia's KO win over John Ryder in round 9 according to Bernard Hopkins is proof of the unbeaten boxer's comfort in the 76.2 kg super middle class. Bernard Hopkins believes Jaime Munguia is ready to fight anyone in the 76.2 kg class including undisputed champion Saul Canelo Alvarez.
Bernard Hopkins was very impressed with Jaime Munguia after his performance last Saturday night. The Mexican boxer dominated British fighter John Ryder in a super middleweight bout at the Footprint Center, Phoenix, Arizona, before stopping his opponent in the ninth round.
Jaime Munguia, who dropped Ryder twice in the early rounds, scored two more knockdowns in the decisive ninth round. This result has Munguia's fans very happy, as it now increases the pressure for a highly coveted fight against Saul Canelo Alvarez.
However, Canelo doesn't have a promotion aligned with Golden Boy, so it's unlikely this fight will happen any time soon. Canelo was previously promoted by Golden Boy before they went through an acrimonious divorce.
Additionally, Canelo is also in the midst of a multi-fight deal with rival team Premier Boxing Champions. Hopkins, a top executive at Golden Boy, was very pleased with the way Munguia submitted a solid challenger, as it proves that Munguia has progressed in the division.
(Munguia first made a name for himself in the sport as a 69.8 kg title winner). Canelo, on the other hand, fought Ryder back in May. “I think he's ready,” Hopkins said of Munguia in an interview with FightHubTV.
“He was more than ready. I saw composure, I saw patience, but I also saw someone who overcame a few rounds of give and take, and he didn't give in to his opponent's tenacity and toughness. When you close out a fight like that, you know “As a boxing fan or expert that this is a different type of level, thinking, talent and competition,” he said.
“Going forward, this is a statement – a statement of what? A statement that he is ready to face anyone at 76.2 kilograms. You can see his strength, energy and tenacity. He presses when he has to press and backs off to see what opponents are up to. he dealt with it better. Again, I saw composure, I also saw execution and I saw someone who is comfortable in the division.”
