RIYADH – The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia condemned the drone attack on a United States (US) military base that killed three soldiers and injured 34 others on Sunday night.
Through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the kingdom said the attack was a terrorist act.
“The ministry renews the kingdom's steadfast support for increasingly intensive international efforts to eliminate terrorism and extremism in all its forms and manifestations and dry up its funding sources,” read a statement from the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as quoted by Al Arabiya, Tuesday (30/1/2024).
The Islamic Resistance Group in Iraq, an umbrella group for Shiite Islamist militias, has claimed responsibility for the attack. They are not afraid of the threat of a response from America.
The pro-Iran militia group promised more escalation if the US continues to support Israel in its brutal invasion of Gaza, Palestine.
The militia group is one of many groups opposing Israel's bombing of Gaza which has killed more than 26,000 Palestinians. This invasion began on October 7 after a Hamas attack on Israel which killed 1,139 people.
“All US interests in the region are legitimate targets and we are not concerned with US threats to respond,” a senior official with the militia group told the Washington Post.
Iran has denied involvement in drone attacks on US military bases in Jordan close to the Syrian border.
“As we have clearly stated before, resistance groups in the region are responding to war crimes and genocide,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said, referring to Israel's invasion of Gaza.
“They do not take orders from the Islamic Republic of Iran. These groups decide and act based on their own principles and priorities as well as the interests of the country and its people,” continued Kanaani.
US President Joe Biden said the attack was carried out by an Iran-backed radical militant group.
Biden promised a tough response to the deaths of three American soldiers. “We will hold all responsible parties accountable in a time and manner of our choosing,” he said in a statement.
