BUENOS AIRES – Bad news comes before MotoGP 2024 rolls around. The third series race next season, namely the 2024 Argentine GP, which is scheduled to be held on April 5-7 is in danger of being cancelled.
According to the Speedweek report published on Monday (29/1/2024), this happened because of the radical austerity policy implemented by the new President of Argentina, Javier Milei. The cancellation process is said to be under discussion and could be decided as early as this week.
For your information, since being elected on December 10, President Javier Milei has implemented a cost cutting policy in all fields. One of the things he did was reduce the number of ministries by half from 18 to just nine.
Therefore, the budget for holding the 2024 Argentina MotoGP will be affected. This is because the motorbike race which was held at the Termas de Rio Hondo Circuit received a large amount of money from the state through the Santiago del Estero Provincial Government and private promoters to hold it.
Previously, on January 19, the Motocross Grand Prix Championship (MXGP), which was scheduled to be held for the first time in Argentina, specifically at the Neuquen Circuit, would be cancelled. However, last weekend it was confirmed that the most elite Motocross race in the world will still hold a series in Argentina on March 9 and 10 thanks to the cooperation of all parties involved in the event.
To date, most MotoGP teams have not been informed by the MotoGP Team Association (IRTA) regarding the threat of cancellation of the 2024 Argentine GP. However, the majority of teams have reportedly suspected that the race won by Marco Bezzecchi last year will not be held this year.
If it is cancelled, there will be a three week gap between the race in Portugal on March 24 and the race in the United States on April 14. However, it is not impossible that there will be a designated circuit to fill the void to hold the race.
Because, there is the name of the Balaton Park Circuit in Hungary which is included as a reserve track on the 2024 MotoGP calendar. However, the current short time with the scheduled date seems to be difficult for them to replace the canceled race in Argentina.
