Washington, DC —
A bipartisan deal in the US Senate combining border law enforcement measures and Ukraine aid faced new doubts on Thursday as Senate Republicans weighed Donald Trump's rejection of the border measures.
Senate negotiators have been trying for weeks to reach a cautious compromise on border and immigration policy, aimed at reducing the number of migrants coming to the US through the border with Mexico.
Senator Mitt Romney, of Utah, told reporters he was “appalled” by Trump's efforts to stop the deal.
“I think the border is a very important issue for Donald Trump. And the fact that he communicated to Republican senators and members of Congress, that he didn't want us to solve the border problem, because he wanted to blame Biden for the problem, was just appalling,” Romney said.
But Romney went on to express the importance of the border and funding to Ukraine.
Romney said that from yesterday's meeting, there was overwhelming support for Ukraine. There were several who asked not to provide additional funds and gave reasons. But most support Ukraine and feel it is in America's interest to stand up to Russia, to ensure that Russia does not continue this invasion. (ns/hour)
