A fire broke out at an oil depot on Friday (19/1) in Russia’s Bryansk region bordering Ukraine following a drone attack, the regional governor said.
Alexander Bogomaz said the Ukrainian drone was “neutralized” but “released ammunition” when intercepted. The ammunition then hit an oil warehouse in Klintsy, a town of about 60,000 residents located about 70 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.
He said there were no casualties, but a blaze broke out at the depot and 13 fire engines had been deployed to extinguish the fire.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said the drone had been “destroyed” and the Ukrainian attack had been “repulsed”.
However, the local train operator stated that a special train equipped to handle large fires arrived in the city to help extinguish the blaze.
“The fire will not affect train traffic in Klintsy,” they said via Telegram.
On Thursday, Ukraine claimed responsibility for a drone attack in the northern Leningrad region, which borders Finland and is located nearly 1,000 kilometers from the border.
The region is home to Russia’s second city, Saint Petersburg, which until now has rarely seen attacks like this. (ah/ft)
