ISLAMABAD – The Pakistani military launched an attack on southern Iran claiming to be targeting terrorist groups, on Thursday (18/1/2024) morning.
This attack further heated up the feud between the two Islamic countries. This comes after the Iranian military on Tuesday attacked Pakistan’s Balochistan province, under the pretext of targeting the Jaish al-Adl group – a group accused of killing as many Iranian policemen in an attack last December.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Islamabad confirmed the military strike this morning, declaring the mission a success. “Our military will take all necessary steps to maintain the safety and security of the people,” it said.
“This morning Pakistan carried out a series of highly coordinated and specifically targeted precision military strikes against terrorist hideouts in Iran’s Siestan-o-Balochistan province,” the ministry continued.
“A number of terrorists were killed in an intelligence-based operation – codenamed ‘Marg Bar Sarmachar’,” the ministry added in a statement, as quoted by RT.
Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry later explained that it had raised serious concerns to Iran in recent years regarding the safe harbor and sanctuary enjoyed by Pakistani-origin terrorists based in Iranian territory.
According to the ministry, Tehran has failed to act on the complaints.
Pakistan, the ministry added, fully respects Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. “Preserving Pakistan’s security was the sole aim of Thursday’s attack,” he explained.
