Marselino Ferdinan managed to steal the world’s attention when he appeared at the 2023 Asian Cup. The Indonesian national team midfielder was listed as the fourth youngest player to score a goal in the quadrennial tournament (21st century).
Marselino scored one goal in the Indonesian national team’s match against Iraq on the first matchday of Group D of the 2023 Asian Cup. However, the KMSK Deinze player’s goal could not help the Garuda squad achieve victory.
The reason is, the Indonesian National Team lost 1-3 to Iraq in the match which took place at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium, Monday (15/1/2024) evening WIB. The three goals for the team nicknamed the Mesopotamian Lions were scored by Mohanad Ali (17′), Osama Rashid (45+7′), and Aymen Hussein (75′).
Marselino’s one goal contribution also made him the fourth youngest player to successfully score a goal in the Asian Cup in the current era. This information was obtained from an X account @FTalentScout.
Marselino scored a goal against Iraq at the age of 19 years 4 months 6 days. The KMSK Deinze player lost out to Tottenham Hotspur star Son Heung-min who was in first place. This South Korean national team player scored a goal in the Asian Cup at the age of 18 years 6 months 10 days.
Meanwhile, in second place is Iraqi striker, Mohanad Ali, who scored a goal at the age of 18 years, 6 months and 10 days. Then right above Marselino, there is a Qatari player, namely Magid Mohamed Hassan, who scored a goal in the Asian Cup when he was 18 years 9 months 7 days old.
Even though they lost to Iraq, the talent monitoring account was truly amazed by the depth of the Indonesian national team squad, the majority of which consisted of young players. The account even stated that Marselino would become an icon of Indonesian football.
“One of the biggest positive things for the Garuda Team in the opening match of the tournament. An icon of the future of Indonesian football,” tweeted the account.
Marselino himself also became the youngest Indonesian player to score a goal for the Indonesian national team in the Asian Cup. This former Persebaya Surabaya player surpassed Ponaryo Astaman’s record. At that time, Ponaryo scored a goal for the Garuda Squad at the age of 24.
