The death of actor Lee Sun Kyun on December 27 2023 left sorrow and question marks. Bong Joon Ho, a well-known director in South Korea, is seeking justice and transparency regarding the problems that led to the actor’s suicide.
Bong Joong Ho together with singer and songwriter Yoon Jong Shin, director Lee Won Taek, actor Kim Ui Seong, and several other senior public figures in South Korea held a press conference and named themselves Culture and Artists Solidarity. They demanded police transparency regarding the case involving Lee Sun Kyun.
According to them, there were many things that followed leading up to Lee Sun Kyun’s death on December 27 2023. One of the things they felt had the most impact and had the biggest influence was the news from one of the South Korean media on October 19 2023 which stated that the actor with the initials L was suspected of using drugs.
This report resulted in an official summons by the police to Lee Sun Kyun on October 23 2023. In the following two months, this drug case became public attention because the media continued to report and expose it in extraordinary ways.
“The entire process, from the initial examination to a thorough examination by the forensic team, sample collection, until the negative test results were released, was reported through the media. Three police summonses were even broadcast. Private voice recordings as well as things unrelated to the evidence were released to the public by the media “Unfortunately, after three summonses and 19 hours of investigation, the actor ended his life, abandoning the request for a lie detector test to reveal the truth,” said a representative from Culture and Artists Solidarity, Friday (12/1).
They also asked for a thorough investigation into this case. Including challenging the police to be transparent about their examination process for Lee Sun Kyun which had been going on for two months before the actor died.
At the end, Cultural Solidarity and Artists questioned the validity of news sources, especially those leaked by KBS media. They asked for this matter to be followed up by the state and emphasized the importance of prioritizing human rights in investigations related to similar problems.
