GAZA – Iran’s involvement in Hamas’ invasion of Israel has been speculated since the attacks began. Iran has long supported the terrorist organization, and at times provided monetary assistance. Iran-backed organizations are spread across various countries.
Missiles, rockets and drones struck targets in the Middle East and a senior Hezbollah figure was killed by an Israeli airstrike as the United States, Israel and other countries clashed with the Iran-aligned struggle group – with attacks hitting vital shipping lanes in the Red Sea, along Israel’s shipping lanes. -Lebanon’s borders are emptied by fleeing citizens and around the crowded capital and US military installations.
Here’s a breakdown of the armed groups the United States and Israel are facing in the Middle East, what unites them, and what’s different about each.
Resistance organizations do not necessarily want further escalation, given their chances in an all-out confrontation with the two countries with the strongest militaries in the world.
“They’re also growing into a common understanding,” said Randa Slim, a regional analyst at the Washington-based Middle East Institute. Why? “When someone’s survival is threatened, everyone will unite,” he said.

1. Hamas

Based in Gaza. It was founded in 1987 during widespread protests by Palestinians against the Israeli occupation. It has early ties to one of the world’s most prominent Sunni groups, the Muslim Brotherhood, which was founded in Egypt in the 1920s. It has vowed to annihilate Israel and has carried out suicide bombings and other deadly attacks on Israeli civilians and soldiers.
Hamas took control of Gaza by force in 2007, a year after they won parliamentary elections there with 44% of the vote. Israel continues to impose a crushing blockade on Gaza, restricting the movement of people and goods in and out of the territory. Hamas receives support from Arab and Muslim countries, including Qatar and Türkiye.
Despite being a Sunni Muslim group, Hamas leaders have grown closer to Shiite Muslim Iran and its allies over the years. Hamas’ October 7 attack on Israel was seen by many as an attempt by Hamas to regain relevance on the world stage. Israel’s right-wing government has abandoned any efforts to negotiate an Israeli-Palestinian political agreement, and world attention has waned.
2. Jihad Islam

The main sponsor of Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) is Iran, which has provided the funding, as well as the training and weapons mentioned above. This is what the US Department of State reported in 2020.
Initially inspired by the Muslim Brotherhood, PIJ’s founders later embraced Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei’s jihadist principles and the idea that Palestine should be liberated through armed struggle. This helped establish close ties between Tehran and PIJ, making the terror group the second largest group in the Gaza Strip after Hamas.
