Los Angeles, AS —
Margot Robbie, Oprah Winfrey and Leonardo DiCaprio will join hundreds of other A-list stars on Sunday (7/1) at the Golden Globe awards, the first major celebration in Hollywood since the twin strikes that shut down much of show business last year.
The awards ceremony, which will be rolled out on a red carpet and splashed with champagne, will honor the best in film and television as voted on by 300 entertainment journalists from around the world, as part of reforms implemented after a diversity and ethics scandal among voters.
“Barbie,” the summer blockbuster starring Robbie as the iconic doll, led all nominees with nine nods. Followed by the historical drama “Oppenheimer,” about the creation of the atomic bomb, with eight nominations.
The Golden Globes kick off Hollywood’s annual awards season, which culminates in the Oscar awards on March 10.
The Golden Globes bring together top stars after a six-month strike by actors and writers in 2023.
The event gives celebrities a chance to highlight their films and TV shows after a months-long ban on promoting films and TV shows.
“I’m a little biased, but this is the best awards show and we’re going to have a great time,” said comedian Jo Koy, who will host his first major awards show starting at 8pm US time.
The event will be broadcast live on US TV network CBS and simulcast to Paramount+ subscribers via Showtime.
A number of stars in the running for this year’s Golden Globes include Robbie and his “Barbie” co-star, Ryan Gosling, as well as “Oppenheimer” star Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone and Robert De Niro, who starred Martin Scorsese-directed film “Killer of the Flower Moon.”
Apart from Jo Koy, Opray Winfrey will also be one of the presenters. Meanwhile superstar Taylor Swift will join the A-list crowd thanks to a nomination for “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour,” her concert film which is competing in new categories for cinematic and box office achievement.
In television, “Succession,” about a high-stakes battle for control of a global media empire, is expected to win awards for its final season. The drama led all nominees with nine, followed by restaurant drama “The Bear” with five.
For the first time there were 27 nominations at this year’s Golden Globes.
The Golden Globes, which are more relaxed than the Oscars, were almost not held due to various allegations. The Los Angeles Times in 2021 revealed ethical violations and a lack of diversity among the roughly 80 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the group that previously voted for the Globes. The 2022 ceremony was canceled while the organization reforms.
Last year, the Golden Globes were sold to new owners and the association was dissolved. Eldridge Industries and Dick Clark Productions now operate the awards, entering 300 journalists from 75 countries with 60% racial and ethnic diversity.
This change seems to have wooed Hollywood’s best talent to embrace the show. (em/hour)
