Thousands of people gathered in Istanbul, Turkey, at the start of the new year on Monday (1/1). They protested Israel’s war in Gaza.
Drone footage of the event showed crowds of people on the city’s Galata Bridge, holding banners and flags in support of the Palestinians, amid the ongoing conflict in the enclave.
In December, Turkey’s foreign minister asked his American counterpart to use his influence with Israel to stop Israeli attacks on Gaza and the West Bank, Turkish diplomatic sources said.
Türkiye supports a two-state solution to the decades-old conflict. The country has strongly criticized Israel, calling for a complete ceasefire and for Israel’s leaders to be tried in international courts for war crimes. Türkiye also criticized Western support for Israel. (y/uh)
