Members of a jury deliberated for a second straight day Friday to determine how much Rudy Giuliani should pay two former Georgia election officials accused of spreading lies about them after the 2020 election that sparked a waves of racist threats and damaged their lives.
The jury deliberated the case for more than three hours Thursday, following a three-day trial in Washington federal court. Mr. Giuliani has already been found liable for defamation in the case, and the jury is deliberating only on the damages he should pay.
Wandrea “Shaye” Moss and her mother, Ruby Freeman, are seeking tens of millions of dollars in damages over false claims by Mr. Giuliani who accused them of vote fraud while the former New York City mayor was trying to hold on to the House White Republican Donald Trump after Democrat Joe Biden won the presidential election in 2020.
Meanwhile, Mr. Giuliani faces other charges related to his time as Mr. Trump’s legal representative.
Mr. Giuliani has continued to repeat the false conspiracy theory that the two women meddled in the Georgia election, including comments he made Monday to reporters after the trial began, lawyers for the two women argued in closing statements.
The lawyers are seeking at least $47 million in damages for what the two women suffered as a result of the intimidation and threats to their lives.
Mr Giuliani’s lawyer has admitted his client was wrong, but insisted he was not fully responsible for the problems the women faced. The damages the women are seeking are unfairly high and would financially ruin Mr. Giuliani, the defense attorney argued.
